Abstract

In traditional Indian parenting systems, women have always been highly instrumental in shaping the moral, psychological, and emotional aspects of children in a family. This way, a woman imparts a crucial role in upbringing a child from its early age to adulthood, which further plays an impactful role in molding the future generation of society in a larger frame. Darshana Dholakia's short story "Baa—My Mother—A Person, A Woman" beautifully illustrates this multifaceted aspect of women, showcasing her influence on the emotional and moral fabric of her children. Through the narrative of a little girl, Dholakia presents the life of a late mother who, by her exemplary life of being “a perfect wife, daughter, sister, and mother," influences the elementary nature of her children while staying rooted in Indian family traditions and values. This profound impact of motherhood is a testament to the significant role women play in shaping the next generation. This research paper explores the role of mothers in instilling a sense of duty, responsibility, morality, emotional intelligence, and self-respect in their children, relying on Indian parenting traditions. It also highlights the challenges and hurdles faced by women during motherhood, showcasing their resilience and strength in balancing personal and familial responsibilities. By examining the story's portrayal of motherhood, this paper aims to contribute to the understanding of Indian parenting traditions and the vital role mothers play in shaping the next generation, ultimately influencing the broader societal fabric.
