The present study provides a contrastive and descriptive analysis of the consonantal phonemic systems of English and Maithili. Such an analysis has important implications for comparative phonology, linguistics, second language acquisition, and language pedagogy. The study aims to identify the similarities and differences between the consonant phonemes of the two languages in order to facilitate more effective language learning. The data were collected from secondary sources and analyzed within a structural phonemic framework. The findings indicate that while English and Maithili share several consonantal phonemes, each language possesses distinct phonemic systems. A major difference lies in the presence of retroflex stop consonants in Maithili, which are absent in English, and the presence of labio-dental fricatives in English, which are not found in Maithili. Furthermore, aspiration functions as a phonemic feature in Maithili but remains allophonic in English. Typologically, English exhibits a two-way contrast based on voicing, whereas Maithili demonstrates a four-way contrast involving both voicing and aspiration. This study addresses a gap in the comparative analysis of English and Maithili consonantal phonemics and contributes to both theoretical linguistics and practical language teaching.
