This study examines the regional and temporal patterns of literacy in Kathua District, Jammu and Kashmir. It employs census data from 2001 and 2011, together with supplementary forecasts for future. The analysis highlights overall literacy rates, gender disparities, urban-rural distinctions, and intra-district patterns. The findings demonstrate progress in literacy over time, while simultaneously exposing persistent gender and regional disparities. These findings attempt to guide policy measures that foster equal educational growth. When examining a region's sociocultural, economic, and demographic circumstances, literacy is essential. According to the 2011 Indian Census, "any individual aged seven years or older who can read and write with comprehension in any language is considered literate." A society or region's ability to develop economically, politically, and generally is hampered by illiteracy. Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate the spatiotemporal literacy patterns in the Kathua District. This research aims to analyze the literacy rates of Kathua District on a block-by-block basis over the decade from 2001 to 2011. When compared to other districts in Jammu & Kashmir, the district's literacy rate by 2011 was impressive. The study employs data from two consecutive census reports, namely the 2001 and 2011 ‘District Census Handbook (DCH) of Kathua,’ to calculate the disparity index concerning male-female literacy rates in the region. The data reveals that in Kathua district, literacy was 63% in 2001, increasing to 70.8% by 2011, demonstrating a notable enhancement of 7.8% over the decade, attributed to improvements in educational infrastructure, transportation, and economic development. Regarding gender-specific literacy rates for the specified years: female literacy was 51.4% and male literacy was 73.8% in 2001; by 2011, these rates increased to 60.8% for females and 80% for males, respectively. In Kathua district, male literacy consistently exceeded that of females across all blocks.
