Abstract

Maheshwari fabric, a traditional handloom textile known for its lightweight texture, distinctive borders, and intricate motifs, has largely been confined to conventional products such as sarees, stoles, and suit materials. This study explores the potential for diversifying Maheshwari fabric into contemporary formalwear, addressing the growing demand for sustainable and heritage-based textiles in modern fashion. The research focuses on developing innovative formalwear designs, including structured garments such as blazers, dresses, and coordinated sets, while preserving the fabric’s traditional identity. A systematic design process was followed, supported by consumer surveys and expert evaluations to assess aesthetic appeal, functionality, and market acceptance. Additionally, a cost analysis was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of producing these diversified products at both small and mass production levels. The findings indicate a positive consumer response towards Maheshwari-based formalwear, with promising scope for cost optimization through scaled production. The study further highlights the global market potential of such products, particularly in the context of ethical and sustainable fashion. Overall, the research establishes diversification into formalwear as a viable pathway for enhancing the economic value and global relevance of Maheshwari fabric.
