Abstract

Colleges and universities have an important role to play in preparing students for jobs and for service to the community. But often, there exists a large gap between the academic learning and the practical skills that are required by employers and industries. Often graduates have good theoretical knowledge but lack competencies such as problem solving, communication, teamwork, digital literacy, leadership and adaptability. This paper seeks to investigate the causes of the skills gap between academia and industry, analyze the evolving needs of the global workforce, and explore potential strategies to align higher education curricula with real-world requirements. There is focus on experiential learning, partnerships with industry, internships, project-based learning, entrepreneurship education and assessment based on competency. The study suggests that a concerted effort from all stakeholders of the education system, including educational institutions, industry partners, policymakers, and students, is required to equip graduates to be workforce-ready and lifelong learners in a constantly evolving world.
