Abstract

The global shift from cash to digital payment has fundamentally reshaped how consumers discover, evaluate, and complete purchases. This chapter examines the intersection of digital payment infrastructure and consumer buying behaviour along three axes: the opportunities digital payment systems create for financial inclusion, e-commerce expansion, and fraud prevention; the behavioural shifts observable in the compression of the purchase journey and the normalisation of instalment-based buying; and the challenges, chiefly security-related, that continue to constrain the full realisation of a cashless economy. Drawing on industry reports, regulatory disclosures, and consumer survey data through 2025, the analysis shows that mobile-based rails such as India's Unified Payments Interface, Brazil's Pix, and Indonesia's QRIS have extended formal financial services to previously unbanked populations while enabling near-frictionless cross-border commerce. At the same time, one-click and biometric checkout mechanisms have altered the psychology of spending, rendering payment increasingly invisible and contributing to a measurable rise in conversion rates and the mainstreaming of buy-now-pay-later services. These gains, however, are counterbalanced by persistent security concerns: a substantial share of consumers report having experienced data loss, identity theft, or online fraud, and consumer trust remains heavily concentrated in regulated banking institutions rather than newer fintech or cryptocurrency intermediaries. Checkout friction and cart abandonment further compound these security concerns, with abandonment rates remaining stubbornly high across both desktop and mobile channels. The chapter concludes that the transition to a fully digital payment economy remains incomplete, and that merchants, payment providers, and policymakers must treat security as a visibly communicated, consumer-facing concern rather than a purely backend engineering one, while accounting for jurisdictional variation in regulatory design and consumer education.
