Abstract

The novel Char Gerd Qala Gashtam… by Rahnaward Zaryab is a story that, through Zaryab’s unique language and prose, creates an engaging and comprehensible experience for the reader. The author’s smooth and rhythmic sentences allow the reader to easily enter the flow of the story and to perceive the characters not only visually, but also to understand their emotions and concerns. Alongside narrating the lives of the characters, the writer presents an accurate picture of Afghan society and history, subtly weaving its social, cultural, and political issues into the text. This feature makes the novel more than just an individual story, allowing it to be viewed as a reflection of the life and culture of Afghan society as well. The narrative structure with two narrators and different timelines adds specific diversity and depth, enabling the reader to observe the story from various angles and experience it in multiple layers. Despite all these positive qualities, the separation between the novel’s two main parts has made the reading difficult for some and slightly reduced its overall cohesion. Overall, with its linguistic richness, emotional weight, and capacity to reflect human and philosophical issues, this novel is a valuable and noteworthy work in contemporary Afghan literature, and reading it is instructive.
