Abstract

The Timurid era, particularly in the cultural capital of Herat, stands as a pinnacle of intellectual, literary, and spiritual development in the history of Khorasan (modern-day Afghanistan). Spanning from 807 to 911 AH (1405–1506 CE), this period witnessed a renaissance in science, literature, architecture, and Islamic mysticism. At the heart of this flourishing was Amir Alisher Nawayi a prominent poet, scholar, statesman, and spiritual figure whose influence shaped both the cultural landscape and the physical environment of the Timurid realm. As a leading patron of the arts and founder of Chagatai Turkish literature, Nawayi played a vital role in supporting Sufi thought, promoting literary expression, and commissioning the construction of public and religious buildings such as mosques, madrasas, libraries, and hospices. This paper examines Nawayi spiritual worldview and its embodiment in the architectural and philanthropic initiatives he sponsored. By analyzing primary texts, architectural evidence, and historical accounts, the study explores how Nawayi commitment to Sufi ethics and public service manifested in the enduring cultural and urban heritage of Herat. The research ultimately highlights the interconnectedness of spirituality, literature, and architecture in the vision of one of the most influential figures of the Timurid Renaissance.
