This research explores the multifaceted portrayal of love as an evil force in the plays of William Shakespeare. While love is often idealized as a noble and virtuous emotion, this study delves into Shakespeare's nuanced examination of the darker aspects of love that can lead to destructive consequences. By analyzing a selection of Shakespeare's tragedies, comedies, and histories, this research aims to shed light on how love's malevolent potential manifests through themes of obsession, manipulation, jealousy, and betrayal. By citing various examples from Shakespeare’s major tragedies, such as Othello, Hamlet, Macbeth, etc., this study will highlight how love has been elementalized as either a fool’s emotion or has eventually led to catastrophic consequences for the protagonists. Furthermore, this research investigates the societal and psychological factors that contribute to the transformation of love into an evil force. Shakespeare's characters grapple with their own insecurities, desires, and societal pressures, which can distort their perceptions of love and drive them to acts of cruelty. By examining these complexities, this study not only offers a deeper understanding of Shakespeare's works but also invites a broader conversation about the nature of love and its ethical implications. In conclusion, this research contributes to the growing body of scholarship on Shakespearean studies by highlighting the darker dimensions of love as depicted in his plays. By examining the portrayal of love as an evil force, this study underscores the enduring relevance of Shakespeare's insights into human nature and the intricate interplay between love and malevolence.
