Abstract

Competency mapping is turning into a go-to strategy for organizations that want to make the most of their people’s skills. In this study, I dig into what actually shapes effective competency mapping—especially when it comes to building up both technical know-how and behavioral strengths at work. I looked at how things like identifying the right competencies, getting employees involved, having strong management support, and setting up good training programs all come together to shape a skilled workforce.

The research draws on workshops and real feedback from employees in different departments. Instead of just top-down planning, I went with a bottom-up approach, letting employees share what skills they need. Those needs got sorted into three buckets: functional, behavioral, and future-focused skills.

The results? Clear communication, hands-on management, solid assessment tools, and making sure personal goals line up with what the organization wants—all of these are key. When organizations get competency mapping right, they don’t just close skill gaps. They build a culture where people keep learning and pushing for excellence.
