Abstract

Before the emergence of coins, all transactions were conducted through goods exchange, known as barter or commodity exchange. In Afghanistan, trade initially began through barter, and after the introduction of coinage, various types of coins were used in different historical periods. Some of these coins were minted outside the borders of Afghanistan, while others were produced within the country. Kings of modern Afghan history, such as Ahmad Shah Durrani, his successors and dynasty, and in later periods Amanullah Khan, Habibullah Kalakani, Mohammad Nadir Khan, Mohammad Zahir Shah, and Mohammad Daoud Khan, also engaged in coin minting. This article aims to identify the coins of the contemporary period of Afghanistan by collecting, analyzing, and interpreting relevant data and by providing answers to the research questions. Based on the study of historical texts and documented evidence preserved in archives, museums, and the Central Bank of Afghanistan, it becomes evident that the kings of modern Afghan history, upon assuming power, issued coins to address economic challenges and financial matters. This is because, in governance, after human resources, the economy is a crucial component. Furthermore, the minting process indicates that Afghanistan at that time was in a relatively developed condition compared to the present situation, as it was able to meet most of its own monetary needs independently. There were active minting centers in important parts of the country, one example of which still exists in Kabul and is known as “Machin Khana.” During the contemporary historical period of Afghanistan, coins and military equipment were produced there.
