This study investigates the rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within Indian Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and addresses the emergent "faculty–student paradox," characterized by a significant gap between high student AI adoption and limited faculty pedagogical uptake. Utilizing a qualitative mapping and analytical framework, the research evaluates AI tools across five functional domains—teaching enhancement, student support, assessment, research, and administration against criteria of transparency, equity, and pedagogical alignment. Findings reveal a taxonomy of multi-layered barriers, including structural infrastructural deficits, institutional policy voids, faculty digital fluency gaps, and ethical concerns regarding algorithmic bias. To resolve this pedagogical mismatch, the paper proposes a pragmatic, one-year implementation roadmap that prioritizes mandatory AI literacy, a transition to process-oriented grading and culturally responsive integration with Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS). The study concludes that by centring pedagogy and equity, Indian HEIs can transform technological disruption into a synergistic educational model that protects academic integrity while enhancing learner autonomy.
