In today's digital world, a humanities based approach to studying schemes related to social development has become both essential and highly significant. The “Jal Jeevan Mission” (JJM) a flagship scheme launched by the Government of India along with the digital technologies employed within it, has brought about profound changes in the lives of rural women, specifically regarding their roles in social activities and their decision-making capabilities. The digital technologies utilized in this mission not only ensure easier access to water for women but also serve to empower them socially and economically. This research paper examines the impact of the digital technologies employed in the Jal Jeevan Mission on women's empowerment, with a specific focus on the Kotputli-Behror district of Rajasthan.
In rural society, the responsibility for water collection has traditionally rested with women; consequently, rural women would spend the majority of their day engaged in this task, which also entailed significant physical exertion. With the advent of the Jal Jeevan Mission scheme, tap water has become available within households, thereby saving women's time and fostering positive changes in their health, education, and participation in social activities.
Furthermore, the utilization of digital tools such as digital dashboards, mobile applications, and data-driven monitoring systems, has rendered the implementation of this scheme more transparent and effective. This study concludes that the Jal Jeevan Mission has emerged as a pivotal instrument in the endeavor to socially and economically empower women residing in rural areas.
