Excessive bride price is a significant social and family problem in Paktia Province, with serious consequences for young people, families, and the wider community. It contributes to financial pressure, weakens family relationships, and creates difficulties in the process of marriage. Therefore, examining its major consequences and identifying appropriate mechanisms for addressing them is important for social and family stability.
The significance of this study lies in examining the major problems resulting from excessive bride price and identifying an appropriate and practical solution in accordance with Islamic principles and applicable laws. The study particularly focuses on family conflicts, negative effects on the future marital life of the husband and wife, and obstacles to the educational, economic, and social development of the groom and his family.
The main objective of the study is to examine these major consequences of excessive bride price in Paktia Province and to identify an effective mechanism for reducing them. It also seeks to assess the role of judicial intervention in protecting the rights of both parties and preventing disputes arising from excessive bride price.
The study employed a field research methodology. Data were collected through questionnaires from participants in Paktia Province and analyzed using descriptive and analytical methods. Relevant Islamic jurisprudential sources and applicable legal principles were also examined to provide theoretical and legal support for the research findings.
The findings indicate that, according to the opinions of the participants, the three aforementioned problems were identified as major consequences of excessive bride price: conflicts between the families of the bride and groom, negative effects on the future marital life of the husband and wife, and obstacles to the educational, economic, and social development of the groom and his family. Furthermore, the participants considered judicial intervention and the formal conclusion and registration of marriage through designated judicial authorities to be the most effective solution for protecting the rights of both parties, reducing excessive financial demands, and preventing related family disputes.
