Abstract

The Church News (1868–1872), predecessor to the influential Chinese Globe Magazine (1874–1883, 1889–1907), played a pivotal role in shaping modern Chinese Protestant journalism during the late Qing dynasty. Amid the cultural tensions between China and the West, The Church News advanced the integration of Christianity and Confucianism by aligning religious and secular values across four key dimensions: editorial mission, content focus, staffing structure, and writing strategy. It thus emerged as a pioneer in the secularization of Protestant media in China. While The Chinese Globe Magazine has received considerable academic attention, the historical value of The Church News remains underexplored. Drawing on Ko Kung-chen’s A History of Chinese Journalism, this study revisits the editorial transformation of The Church News and its evolution into The Chinese Globe Magazine, with particular focus on Confucian-Christian dialogue and knowledge-based educational discourse. This article argues that The Church News not only facilitated early cross-cultural and interfaith communication but also laid groundwork for a shared ethical framework. Its case offers theoretical insights into civilizational dialogue and practical lessons for managing religious and cultural diversity in contemporary China.
