Abstract

The idea of Integral Humanism by Deendayal Upadhyaya offers a unique system that combines material evolution with moral and spiritual growth and, thus, suggests a holistic perspective on the individual and social welfare. This philosophy is based on the tradition of Indian metaphysics and is opposed to the constraints of Western ideologies that either place a lot of emphasis on the autonomy of any individual or collective dominance over the wholeness of a human being. The most important aspect of the model developed by Upadhyaya is the interdependence of body, mind, intellect, and soul as layers of human existence, all of which require nourishment to develop fully. He applies this same integration to the societal level by his social philosophy where he sees society as a living organism where harmony, cooperation and moral responsibility are the principles that rule human relationships. Using a new understanding of the conventional Purusharthas-Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha, Upadhyaya develops a value-based practice that provides a balance between ethical behaviour, economic pursuit, pleasure and spiritual liberation. The current research paper discusses these dimensions thoroughly and provides the assessment of the weaknesses and strengths of his thinking with references to the modern socio-political issues. The paper concludes that Integral Humanism, in spite of some structural ambiguity, provides a subtle and culturally derived perspective on the meaning of human progress, social harmony and universal interconnection.
